DU Associate Prof Adrienne Russell and I have received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to establish the University of Denver’s Institute for the Digital Humanities in 2011. This program provides humanities scholars with an opportunity to participate in an 18-month non-residential fellowship mentoring program that will assist them in developing expertise in and incorporating into their research and teaching digital media such as video, websites, blogs, data mapping, and other tools. Particular focus is on scholars who are interested in public outreach. Application deadline for program beginning in June 2011 is January 15, 2011. More information on the program is here.

Digital Storytelling & Religious Identity

Associate Professor Mary Hess and I have received a grant from the Lilly Endowment to develop resources to help youth workers utilize collective digital storytelling projects for identity formation. The University of Denver’s Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement and the Morgridge Community of Scholars supported the development of two pilot projects utilizing collective digital storytelling with a Reformed synagogue and a moderate Protestant congregation in the Denver area.

I’m working with Rutgers Assistant Professor Regina Marchi and Texas Tech doctoral student Rachel Monserrate on a manuscript, Young People and the Future of News. Support for this effort has come from the Lilly Endowment, the University of Denver’s Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement, and the University of Denver’s Partners in Scholarship Program (Undergraduate Research Center).
